THE BIRTH OF RAICA
It all started at an RPCC mobilization training workshop in October 2018. Its purpose was to teach individuals how to lead a group of people in meaningful climate action. One of the options for a breakout session was "Faith in Climate." Here met Jackie, Jim, Ruth, and others, who discussed the great potential for collective green impact in spiritual communities. They came up with the idea for an interfaith summit, where members of all different congregations in the Rochester area could come celebrate their common goal of rejuvenating the planet as well as learn best practices from others. The following January, they went to work, organizing a summit in April 2019 with 13 represented faiths and many vendors to connect with - sponsored by their new group - RAICA - Rochester Area Interfaith Climate Action. It was their first big success, and it led to the formation of several campaigns, including composting and community solar. Since then, many of the original members have stayed on, building on the momentum from those first few months, to expand RAICA's reach in the Rochester community.
